The Trenton Free Public Library's Outposts allow for a very non-traditional Library experience yet exposes patrons to some of our Library materials

LEID Products, LLC., the leader of electronic locker and cabinet storage with biometric asset protection and control, today announced that the Trenton Free Public Library in New Jersey has confirmed success of its Library Outpost program. The program implemented its Access.it electronic library lockers and was initially introduced to the community at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 1, 2015. After five months in operation, the Library Outposts have creatively expanded the library’s reach to patrons who otherwise would not be able to access the full-service library.
Back in 2010, the Trenton Free Public Library closed four of its five library locations due to budget cuts. This drastically limited its ability to serve patrons. The library’s administrators were faced with the challenge to retain engagement with the community despite the severely reduced budget.
The library’s Executive Director, Kimberly Matthews, researched self-service library access systems. She determined that an investment in strategically placed systems could economically expand the library’s reach. With funding allocated for the project, two convenient Library Outpost locations were selected. One is in a YMCA building and the other is in the Mercer Professional Center that houses medical offices and related family services.
“The Trenton Free Public Library's Outposts allows the Library to reach those patrons who cannot reach our Academy Street location. It allows for a very non-traditional Library experience yet exposes patrons to some of our Library materials,” said Patricia Hall, Operational Manager of the Trenton Free Public Library. “We are encouraged with its prospects as well as the ability to expose individuals to our Library who may otherwise not have access.”
The Trenton team built the Library Outposts with the LEID Products Access.it electronic library lockers. Patrons can order any book from the library’s main branch and pick it up from the electronic lockers using the keypad and their library card. The Library Outposts also include a library vending machine from Public Information Kiosk, Inc. The vending machine complements the lockers, offering customers instant pickup for a spur of the moment selection. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.
“The library vending machine is like having a snack vending machine; the choices are limited. But offering LEID’s locker system is like adding grocery delivery – patrons can select from the entire library’s offering and have it delivered to a location convenient for pick up,” explains Matthews. “Plus, the quality of LEID’s lockers is superior. The sturdy and durable construction ensures the lockers will be secure and endure heavy usage.”
