Drivers should remember that a seat belt isn’t about your driving. It’s protection against other drivers and whatever recklessness they might be up to.
Lexington, KY (PRWEB) July 27, 2012
Lexington car accident lawyer Frank M. Jenkins, III said a rise in fatal automotive crashes in 2011, as recently reported by Kentucky State Police, indicates that drivers and passengers need to do more to protect themselves on the road.
“The numbers that jump out to us among State Police reports about Kentucky car accidents are the numbers pertaining to seat belt use and motorcyclists who were not wearing helmets,” said Jenkins, founder of the Frank Jenkins Law Office.
“Drivers should remember that a seat belt isn’t about your driving. It’s protection against other drivers and whatever recklessness they might be up to,” Jenkins said. “The same is true for motorcycle riders. Please, wear a helmet whenever you get on a motorcycle.”
Kentucky State Police recently reported that 386 people have died on Kentucky roads this year through the July 4 holiday period. That number marks 36 more fatalities than were reported at this time in 2011.
Of 314 automobile fatalities, 176 victims were not wearing seat belts, State Police said. Of 41 motorcycle fatalities, 21 were not wearing a helmet.
“The State Police did not say why there have been more fatal car crashes,” Jenkins said, “but from our experience, it’s safe to say that some of those who died could have survived, perhaps with injuries, if they had been wearing seat belts or wearing helmets.”
The Frank Jenkins Law Office investigates car and motorcycle accidents in the development of personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of Kentucky residents hurt because of reckless and negligent drivers.
Jenkins said anyone hurt in a motor vehicle crash of any kind should contact an experienced auto accident attorney to review the circumstances of their accident.
“Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about other drivers before a crash occurs, which is why you have to protect yourself,” Jenkins said. “After an accident, if you’ve been injured or a family member has died, you have rights that should be protected, and that’s the service that a car and motorcycle accident attorney can provide.”
