This is a tremendous increase and a reflection of the true blessings Liberty has enjoyed with our growth
Lynchburg, VA (Vocus) May 22, 2010
Liberty University honored its largest graduating class yet at its commencement ceremony on May 15. The class of 2010, which was composed of 8,600 graduates, shattered last year’s record of 6,350.
“This is a tremendous increase and a reflection of the true blessings Liberty has enjoyed with our growth,” University Registrar Larry Shackleton said.
An estimated 28,000 attended this year’s ceremony at Arthur L. Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Va. About 4,400 students participated in the ceremony, a significant increase from last year when 2,300 graduates were present.
With a major expansion of Williams Stadium under way, the university had to make special arrangements to accommodate the large crowd. Temporary bleachers were set up at the south end of the field and above seating that was already in place on the east side and along the sidelines. Workers set up an additional 9,500 chairs on the field.
Of this year’s graduates, 24 percent were residential students and 76 percent received their degrees from Liberty University Online.
