Groton Public Library Installs Guardware’s iShield™ Pornography Protection Solution

Software improves on-line safety for library patrons, complies with CIPA.

Media, PA (PRWEB) July 12, 2006 -– Guardware LLC, today announced that Connecticut’s Groton Public Library (GPL) has replaced its on-line internet filtering system with iShield, the company’s innovative software application that monitors, identifies, blocks and deters the display of pornography on personal computers, to safeguard its publicly accessed computers. The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), which governs online access standards, requires public facilities like schools and libraries receiving federal monies to have software in place to control access to inappropriate images.

We’ve found iShield to be particularly effective because it has also cut down on the number of requests from users to temporarily turn off filters for bona fide research. Our previous filtering software frequently blocked educational sites and even webmail accounts that people used for entirely lawful purposes. iShield frees up our staff to perform other valuable services for our patrons.
The Connecticut library selected iShield because the software uses a sophisticated detection engine to analyze and block offensive images before they are displayed in web browsers. Combined with powerful text analysis, iShield provides more accurate protection than the previously used filtering software, which blocked whole pages based on keyword clues. iShield blocks only questionable images, not entire pages, and is delivering more robust security for the 100-200 people that use the library’s computers each day.

“We have strengthened our controls by installing image-detection software that gives an additional level of protection to our patrons, especially children, from adult content,” stated Alan G. Benkert, Director of the Groton Public Library. “We’ve found iShield to be particularly effective because it has also cut down on the number of requests from users to temporarily turn off filters for bona fide research. Our previous filtering software frequently blocked educational sites and even webmail accounts that people used for entirely lawful purposes. iShield frees up our staff to perform other valuable services for our patrons.”

“Our unique approach of identifying and blocking offensives images at the point of display significantly improves protection accuracy while minimizing the number of falsely-blocked pages that are generated,” commented Joe Waldron, Managing Director of Guardware. “This enables public institutions like libraries and schools to meet government requirements and protect children and other individuals from inadvertently being exposed to adult content without unduly restricting the public’s right to access information.”

Guardware is a software solution provider committed to developing and marketing innovative personal computer applications that improve productivity and security. Guardware’s products have received numerous awards as well as strong press reviews from technology publications like PC Magazine. The company offers a full suite of pornography protection systems: iShield™ blocks pornography in web browsers, iShield Plus™ blocks pornography from all sources (web browsers, email, CD, DVD) and ScreenShield™Enterprise provides network-wide administration and protection from pornography.
