Once upon a time the tuxedo...

There are conflicting accounts of when and by whom the tuxedo was first worn. George Bryan Brummell, better known as Beau Brummell, is often credited with the invention of the formal suit during the early nineteenth century. Henry Poole & Co. of Savile Row also claims to have made a "short smoking jacket" for the Prince of Wales in 1865. This appears to have been worn by the Prince with a black bow tie, and the fashion was copied by various gentlemen in his circle.

The English dinner jacket was introduced to the United States in 1886 by Pierre Lorillard, an American tobacco manufacturer, at one of his formal parties held at Tuxedo Park, a country Club in New York. The other clubmen imitated him and the new style quickly acquired the name "tuxedo".

The gloom and sobriety of the black tie attire brings out the glittering of the lady's gown, a testimony of the wealth and prestige of the gentleman escorting her.
