Even locally made jewellery typically uses gems imported from overseas–there's no guarantee of fair trade or clean mining practices and you don't know if the stones have been dyed. That's why I'm mining my own stones.

Instead of buying gemstones from a supply catalog, Lake&Co. Jewelry will mine its own semi-precious gems locally. The company launched this month and hopes to convince jewellery buyers that British Columbia stones are just as beautiful as imported semi-precious gems.
“My source of rhodonite is part of the same deposit as the defunct Hollings mine–once famous for its gem-quality rhodonite. It's exciting to be able to use this world-class material in my jewellery” says founder D.J Lake who has spent the past five years exploring for semi-precious gems and preparing a line of local gemstone jewellery for the company's online launch.
Lake says the decision to find his own gems was partly a question of ethics and partly artistic vision: “Even locally made jewellery typically uses gems imported from overseas–there's no guarantee of fair trade or clean mining practices and you don't know if the stones have been dyed. That's why I'm mining my own stones. It's also a matter of creating unique jewellery that simply isn't available elsewhere.
British Columbia has its share of interesting geology, but most people aren't aware how semi-precious gems occur in their natural environment. “I want to share these fantastic rocks with all the non-geologists out there that likely wouldn't have the opportunity to appreciate them otherwise” adds Lake who mines his gems on a small-scale, mostly by hand.
The three varieties of local gemstones on offer are pink Salt Spring rhodonite, red jasper, and flowerstone.
