When implants first came out in the 1960s, they were known as first generation implants; today we are on our fifth generation.

Consultant plastic surgeon Mr Patrick Mallucci from the Cadogan Clinic, a premium London breast clinic, gives his expert opinion on breast implants and some breast implant myths in a new special feature on the Cadogan Clinic’s website. Dispelling some of the myths associated with silicone breast implants is particularly important considering the recent scandal with PIP implants, which has caused great concern among women who have either undergone or are considering breast augmentation surgery at a London breast clinic.
As noted by Mr Mallucci, implant development technology is a huge field, which has made great advances over recent years. “When implants first came out in the 1960s, they were known as first generation implants; today we are on our fifth generation”, says Mr Mallucci. According to Mr Mallucci, most of the technological advances concern the design and structure of the implant “shell” which is very robust today and prevents the leakage of silicone, whereas the texture is designed to keep the implants soft so as to allow them to adhere to the breast and improve breast shape.
Mr Mallucci also notes that inside the implant, the silicone itself is no longer semi-liquid, but rather, semi-solid or something which is referred to as cohesive gel. “So, even if this implant is cut, the gel doesn’t go anywhere. Now, this is very important, for safety, for the longevity of the implant, and for reliability, in terms of producing results which are long-lasting and pleasing”.
The expert opinion of Mr Mallucci is likely to ease some of the concerns associated with the recent breast implant scandal, which revolved around the infamous PIP implants. The Cadogan Clinic, as a premium London breast clinic, is one the very few facilities on the market to have never used the controversial PIP implants in the first place. As a leading London breast clinic, the Cadogan Clinic offers several implant choices, with silicone being one of the most popular alternatives. “Silicone remains undoubtedly the material we know most about, that is most predictable, most natural, and that we are most comfortable using”, says Mr Mallucci.
