Young people from Leeds capture Olympic fever in Yorkshire through LS Live 2012

Interviewing local olympic athletes was really a once in a lifetime experience. LS Live has given me the chance to do something very different, and I've enjoyed every bit of it!

DigitalMe have been helping young people to capture the Olympic fever in Leeds through LSLive 2012 http://www.makewav.es/lslive. Funded by Leeds Inspired, LS Live 2012 has trained up young people from Leeds as a reporting team to cover everything happening in Leeds, inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The team have created their own playful reporting events around the city, covered all the action from the London 2012 Live Site and found out how the Games have inspired the children of Leeds at Breeze on Tour. Reporters have encouraged their interviewees to be playful on camera, demonstrating the famous Usain Bolt and “Mo-Bot” poses and donning masks of the Brownlee brothers!

Yorkshire athletes’ success at the Games has been a running theme through the team’s video reports, with interviews with members of the public capturing the local pride and support for our region’s athletes. The athletes’ homecoming celebration in Millennium Square was a highlight, where LS Live 2012 reporters grabbed an interview with Gold medallist Alistair Brownlee and his brother Jonathan Brownlee, Bronze Triathlon Medalist.

Megan, a student from Beckfoot 6th Form, was one of the students invited to cover the action of the athletes’ homecoming celebration. The team will also be covering the Paralympic Games, attending the Paralympic Torch Relay and featuring our local hopefuls such as Hannah Cockroft. The reporters will also investigate the legacy of the 2012 Games in Yorkshire, finding out whether young people have been inspired by their local heroes, and discovering opportunities for getting involved in new sports around Leeds.

DigitalMe are encouraging young people across the UK to report on the 2012 Games, as part of their Support to Reporter (S2R) project. Reports so far have covered the Olympic Torch Relay, reviews of the ceremonies and features of favourite athletes, and the first 500 successful reports will receive a 2012 Reporter medal! 200 medals have already been awarded, and reporters over 13 will also receive a digital medal using the new Open Bagdes system created by Mozilla.
