Our awards celebrate those independent and alternative periodicals that give readers a fresh take on their world. That’s often accomplished by focusing on people, places, and ideas that are either misrepresented or ignored by big media.

Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names three area publications as nominees for the 22nd annual Utne Independent Press Awards. Winners will be announced May 18 at the MPA-Association of Magazine Media’s Independent Magazine Media Conference in San Francisco.

The Utne Independent Press Awards recognize the distinctiveness and vitality of alternative and independent publishing. Nominees in nine categories represent the best in independent political, social/cultural, arts, environmental, international, body/spirit, and science/technology coverage as well as best writing and general excellence.

Two local publications are vying for best social/cultural coverage.

Good — nominated for best social/cultural coverage. Good covers news for people who want to live well and do good.

make/shift — nominated for best social/cultural coverage. The magazine creates and documents contemporary feminist culture and action by publishing journalism, critical analysis, and visual art.

Miller-McCune — nominated for best science/technology coverage. This Santa Barbara-based magazine draws on academic research and other definitive sources to provide reasoned policy options and solutions for today’s pressing issues.

Editor in Chief David Schimke believes that independent journalists continue to turn out high-quality original work, despite economic challenges and the ever-changing media landscape.

“Our awards — like every issue of Utne Reader — are designed to celebrate those independent and alternative periodicals that give readers a fresh take on their world,” Schimke says. “And that’s often accomplished by focusing on people, places, and ideas that are either misrepresented or ignored by big media.”
