Many Insurance Companies Now Provide Coverage for EVLT, the Gold Standard in Varicose Vein Treatment

Although often seen as a cosmetic concern, varicose veins can be painful and lead to an incurable condition known as chronic venous insufficiency. With recent studies showing significant success rates, varicose vein treatment is becoming more popular than ever before. Modern, minimally invasive procedures, such as Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), are being utilized for varicose vein removal at the Los Angeles Varicose Vein Center, and are now being covered by various health insurance plans.

The majority of varicose vein sufferers go undiagnosed and untreated...Fortunately, there are ample treatment options which are covered by most health insurance plans

More than simply an unsightly nuisance, varicose veins that appear on the legs and feet can become a debilitating condition that cannot be ignored. By seeking medical intervention, varicose veins can be eliminated and quality of life can be improved. The Los Angeles Varicose Vein Center offers affordable treatment plans for a number of vein problems, such as varicose and spider veins.

The gold standard for varicose vein treatment, Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), is an in-office procedure where a laser fiber is inserted under the skin, directly into the problem veins. A laser heats the lining from within, causing the varicose vein to collapse and fade from view. Typically performed in less than 30 minutes, this EVLT treatment allows patients to return to their normal activities immediately following surgery with minimal side effects.

Recent research found that after six months, more than 95 percent of study participants treated with EVLT were satisfied and would recommend the procedure to others. The study concluded that EVLT has been proven to be a safe, effective method for the treatment of lower limb varicose veins. Further research found that EVLT produced a better cosmetic outcome versus vein stripping surgery.

“The majority of varicose vein sufferers go undiagnosed and untreated,” said Dr. Maged Mikhail of the Los Angeles Varicose Vein Center. “Fortunately, there are ample treatment options which are covered by most health insurance plans, including Medicare, with patients who have symptoms such as continued pain, swelling, leg cramps or tenderness. An ultrasound can detect if there are symptoms of venous reflux, in which the greater or lesser saphenous veins do not function properly.”

Varicose veins are caused by a backup of blood which begins to pool. Any vein can become varicose, but they are most common in the legs and feet, where blood travels against gravity back towards the heart. In healthy veins, tiny, one-way valves allow blood to flow upwards and close to prevent backward flow. When the walls of the veins stretch and become less flexible, the valves are weakened and blood begins to leak backward, causing the vein to swell.

Left untreated, varicose veins can develop into circulatory problems, such as painful ulcers or blood clots. Health insurance covers treatment for varicose veins with documented medical necessity and after conservative therapies have failed. Some of the conservative methods used to treat vein problems are prescribing graduated compression stockings, which are worn daily. These stockings squeeze the legs to help the veins and muscles move blood upwards toward the heart. Patients may also be advised to lose weight to lessen the severity of varicose veins, as excessive weight puts strain on the legs.

“Patients whose condition doesn’t respond to weight loss or compression stockings are good candidates for additional treatment methods,” said Dr. Mikhail. “These minimally-invasive procedures offered at the Los Angeles Varicose Vein Center have mostly taken the place of older, painful treatments like vein stripping.”
