For the past two generations people have been gaining weight at alarming rates, and today our nation's children face life-long struggles with diabetes, health problems, asthma and other diseases related to obesity

Dr. Barry Sears, bestselling author of The Zone, told listeners of WMST AM & FM radio that a perfect nutritional storm is sweeping across America as government farm subsidies of corn and soy crops have caused a glut of cheap, refined carbohydrates, resulting in a prevalent pro-inflammatory diet rich in omega-6 fatty acids.
“For the past two generations people have been gaining weight at alarming rates, and today our nation’s children face life-long struggles with diabetes, health problems, asthma and other diseases related to obesity,” said the creator of the Zone Diet and expert on the hormonal impact of food.
“Government subsidies on the order of $20 billion a year since the 1960s have resulted in an overweight population and now threaten to increasingly burden our nation’s health-care system with spiraling costs that are heading America into a massive financial crisis,” he added.
Dr. Sears, the creator of the Zone Diet, said that the crisis could be reversed if Americans shift to an anti-inflammatory diet. In America, true health-care reform must start in the kitchen with a much-needed balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat in our diet.
“People should think of obesity as a cancer and realize that the common advice of eat less and exercise more will simply not work. The problem is far more basic and needs to be addressed at its root cause, in our omega-6-rich food supply, which burdens all Americans, especially those with a genetic predisposition to obesity,” Dr. Sears said.
He also told listeners about his recently introduced Zone foods that are made with one part fat for every two parts of protein and three parts of carbohydrates and designed to alter the body’s hormonal responses to cause appetite suppression for four to six hours.
“If you aren’t hungry, then cutting back on calories is easy, especially when eating foods you love to eat,” Dr. Sears said.
“We realize that if people can lose excess weight with the least change in their current eating habits, then that’s the ideal foundation for long-term weight control. Our Zone foods, such as, pasta, bagels, rolls, bread, croutons, bagel chips and cookies, make the loss of excess body fat easy, inexpensive and delicious,” said the obesity expert.
