Bencardino Excavating (http://www.bencardino.com), a full-service excavation company located in Bucks County, Pa. and owned by Louis A. Bencardino, will begin work on a construction project in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia – Umbria Village.

The Bencardino Excavating crew was hired by J.G. Petrucci Company, Inc., based in Bethlehem, Pa., to handle the Philadelphia project. The crew will perform a full site package at the condominium job site including clearing, a site grade, curbs, paving and all foundations.

The construction project was originally planned and approved by the Philadelphia Planning Commission and City Council, including a thumbs-up from then-councilman Michael Nutter. It was originally proposed as a 226-unit high-rise, but will now be 149 rental units on three elevations with parking garages underneath. Located on Umbria Street at the foot of Parker Avenue, the site is an eight-acre tract that sits in close proximity to the Schuylkill River Trail and the Manayunk Canal and Towpath. It is part of what is being labeled transit-oriented development as it is on the east side of the Ivy Ridge Train Station.

“We are always happy to be working within the City of Philadelphia and to be partnering with J.G. Petrucci Co., Inc. Our crew looks forward to getting the excavation work at Umbria Village underway and seeing this substantial venture in the Manayunk-area through to completion,” said Lou Bencardino.

On Oct., 12, a ribbon cutting was held at the site location and attended by members of Philadelphia City Council along with the construction management company. Mayor Michael Nutter made remarks celebrating that the project was not funded by public money and that it was a viable and inspired project that will employ hundreds – and house hundreds of people.
