With the economy stuck in economic recession, AT & T made a move to gain market share by offering free activation through select online resellers. Iowa City, Iowa based LowCostCells.com is one such reseller.
"The net result for consumers is that they are now able to receive a free cell phone, free shipping, and free activation. The consumer simply can't receive a better value," said Schmidt.
This news comes on the heels of AT & T announcing that its faster third-generation (3G) wireless network expansion is planned to be complete by the end of the year. The carrier is expanding its 3G coverage into 372 markets from about 350, AT & T Chief Technology Officer John Donovan said in an interview.
AT & T has taken its time building out the 3G network to help conserve cash. They expect upgrades to the current network to increase data flow by as much as 10-fold. The company plans to take the same approach with future 4G technology.
"We provide online cell phone sales for AT & T, Verizon, Nextel, and Sprint. I'd have to say that this move makes AT & T the most aggressive when it comes to reducing start-up costs for the consumer," Said Schmidt. "Clearly the overall goal for AT & T is two-fold. First, they want to acquire new customers. In other words, they're paying it forward in an attempt to make a profit as customers renew their plans year after year. Second, they need to increase their ability to handle more cell phone traffic. This is where the 3G network becomes increasingly important."
LowCostCells.com is an online distributor of cell phones for major cell phone carriers across the United States. The company's goal is to provide the best value and service in the cell phone industry.
