Summer is naturally a time for parties and socializing, especially for teens, but there is never a time, or excuse, for driving while intoxicated.

Because the summer driving season is in full swing, safety behind the wheel is paramount, particularly for teen drivers who, according to, account for more auto accidents than any other age group. Furthermore, approximately 60 percent of teen crashes involve distractions behind the wheel. “Teen driving accidents increase significantly in the summer, due in no small part to texting and using social media while driving,” said personal injury attorney Luke Dow, founder of Luke Dow Law Firm.

To help teen drivers avoid accidents, Dow lists the following three tips to always adhere to while driving:

No. 1: Put cell phones away. “Driving should be just that: driving,” said Dow. “Your life, or the life of another, is more important than any text you might be sending or reading, or any post on Facebook, etc. Keep your cell phone in the glove compartment while driving. If you really feel the need to check your phone, safely pull over and turn your engine off before doing so. This can really be a matter of life or death.”

No. 2: Always obey the speed limit. A high number of fatal teen accidents every year can be attributed to speeding. Driving within the speed limit can better ensure the safety of the driver, whether they are a teen or not.

No. 3: Refrain from drinking and driving. “Summer is naturally a time for parties and socializing, especially for teens, but there is never a time, or excuse, for driving while intoxicated,” said Dow. “The easiest way to prevent others from drunk driving is to simply take their keys or have a designated sober driver.”
