Strong Growth Seen for M2M Technology Despite Global Economic Slowdown. Networked Device Revenues Expected To Exceed $12 bn by 2013. Revenue opportunity is expected to shift away from enablement opportunity & device manufacturing, and towards Smart Services.

Harbor Research, the world's leading market research and consulting experts for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication and Smart Services, announces the publication of their 2009-2013 M2M / Pervasive Internet Market Forecast Report. The current report represents the most comprehensive analysis of intelligent device networking in the marketplace.

According to the report, Harbor Research forecasts that the number of intelligent device shipments will grow from 73 million units in 2008 and to 430 million units in 2013. Total device revenue is expected to exceed $12 billion by 2013. Much of the growth will be due to the increasing presence of Wireless PAN technology, including ZigBee and other 15.4 related technology, particularly those used in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs).

Harbor has assessed the impact of the current global economic slowdown, and sees that while growth has slowed below 20% in the short term, there remains strong demand for M2M communication and associated Smart Services. Smart Services are the post-sales solutions that take advantage of the real-time data being communicated by M2M devices.

The report notes that during this time adoption will be driven primarily by technological improvements, cross network integration, and advances in product innovation. Revenue opportunities are expected to shift away from basic enablement of devices and towards Smart Services. In particular, Harbor sees strongest demand for Asset Management and Energy Management in the coming years.

Glen Allmendinger, President of Harbor Research notes, "We're currently on the cusp of a transformation in the marketplaceā€¦ The market for connected products and managed services will increasingly be driven by customer interaction to foster innovation. Over the next five years, we're going to see that the true value held in connected devices will shift towards value-added services where there's unheralded potential for revenue generation."
