Ten Theories of Magic (10ToM) is a website launched on the idea of an ultimate worldwide endurance competition for magicians. The web page caters to any magician that has access to a video camera and an Internet connection. Contestants will rival through ten different categories of magic (referred to as Theories), broken up into ten month-long competitions throughout the year. Each monthly challenge gives magicians around the world a chance to submit video of themselves performing a magic trick relevant to the competing theory.
From the Theory of Production (making something magically appear) to the Theory of Mentalism, every month focuses on a different premise in magic. While monthly prizes are awarded to the top three qualifying videos that best demonstrate a Theory, points are also awarded and accumulated throughout the year to appoint the three Annual Endurance Finalists qualifying to win a Grand Prize.
Monthly prizes range from signed posters, collectible decks, and Amex gift cards. The three qualifying Annual Endurance Finalists who collect the most points throughout the ten competitions win additional grand prizes at the end of the year.
Only one first place finalist will collect 10ToM’s Prestigious Plaque, recognizing them as the Master of Magic title holder for that year. In addition to a featured article and an exclusive Press Release, a large cash prize serves as the icing on top of the winner’s cake. The ten short-term competitions forming the Annual Tournament are accommodating to all; from the novice magic hobbyist to the professionally careered magician, awards can be obtained regardless of the level of engagement.
Founded by Illusionist Jourdan Rombough, a low key street magician and proclaimed card hustler, the cloud-based tournament was devised to utilize our emerging digital culture and bring magicians together through the dynamics of social media and the information super highway. 10ToM’s website capitalizes on modern web-applications designed to facilitate a participatory information sharing experience through user-collaboration; a concept known as Web 2.0.
This concept serves as the backbone of 10ToM’s tournament, supporting a user-centered website making the demanding task of collaboration over the World Wide Web possible for magicians.
