Snow and ice aren’t the causes of car wrecks. Instead, accidents are caused by a driver’s failure to recognize the dangers created by the snow and ice.

Stephen B. Wade, a Maine personal injury attorney with the Auburn-based law firm of Skelton, Taintor & Abbott, says motorists should put safety first when driving this winter in the cold, snow and ice.

As the first wintry weather arrives this month, motorists should have their vehicles prepared for the weeks ahead and make it a point to adjust their driving to treacherous road conditions, says Wade, who has extensive experience in representing automobile accident victims.

“Snow and ice aren’t the causes of car wrecks,” Wade says. “Instead, accidents are caused by a driver’s failure to recognize the dangers created by the snow and ice.”

According to the National Climatic Data Center, the annual snowfall in Maine can range from 112 inches per year in Caribou in the north to 71 inches in Portland in the south. Many parts of the state, including the Lewiston and Auburn region, already have seen slight traces of snow and sleet this season.

Wade suggests that motorists check their tires, brakes and windshield wipers to reduce the risk of an accident being caused by a mechanical failure. He also says it is important to slow down in the hazardous conditions caused by snow, sleet, freezing rain, slush and ice.

“Even a thin covering of snow on the road can cause a driver to lose control of a vehicle,” he says. “You also have to be mindful of patches of black ice on the road.”

Even the most thoroughly prepared and careful driver, however, can become the victim of the negligent or reckless driving of another. According to the Maine Department of Public Safety, there have already been 142 highway deaths this year in the state, which is a total of five more traffic fatalities than at this point of the year in 2009.

If involved in a winter weather-related car accident, Wade says it is important for a person to contact an experienced Maine car accident attorney who can review the facts of the case and review the person’s insurance coverage. In many cases, the individual may be entitled to a financial recovery for car damage as well as compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages related to the individual’s injuries.
