On April 5, Malk Sustainability Partners (MSP) released a study examining drivers of sustainability and environmental initiatives at software companies. The paper was based upon interviews with sustainability managers at a range of companies from Adobe Systems Inc. to Juniper Networks as well as the MSP team’s direct industry experience and secondary research. Rather than cataloging initiatives underway at the respondent companies, the study examines why they chose to develop substantive environmental efforts, the benefits realized from doing so, and advice to peer companies just beginning to consider the environment.

“We found that the study participants had very practical drivers behind their environmental programs,” said Zach Goldman, the MSP Partner who led the study. “The most cited drivers were satisfying customer inquiries about environmental management, achieving cost savings from reducing energy use, and capturing new markets for green solutions. However, interest from employees and shareholders were also cited.”

When it came to advice to peer companies, the respondents offered a variety of perspectives on how to get started on a sustainability initiative.

“There was a real variety in the suggestions which our respondents offered to peer companies just beginning to look at the environment,” continued Goldman, “some of our respondents suggested starting with energy saving ‘quick wins’, while others suggested engaging customers and shareholders about their concerns. Overall, companies should match the program’s structure and objectives to their own respective corporate positioning and mission.”
