With more baby boomers entering retirement years, the number of cataract sufferers will naturally increase. The need for cataract surgery will likely also increase, in part related to boomers “seeking to keep the dreaded signs of aging at bay”[1]. In 2011, an unprecedented technology called ORange® allowed surgeons to measure vision quality during the procedure, rather than weeks later. Seniors needing cataract surgery in Texas, and particularly Dallas/Fort Worth, have an advantage as one of the top ORange providers in the U.S. is Grapevine, TX-based Eye Consultants of Texas.

Recently, the inventor of ORange, WaveTec Vision, introduced a more enhanced version now called ORA System™. Eye Consultants of Texas, the first Dallas/Fort Worth practice to use the technology, has upgraded to ORA to further improve surgical outcomes.

ORA uses the world’s first Intraoperative Wavefront Aberrometer, or diagnostic device, that provides real-time measurements of the eye during cataract surgery. Previously, surgeons had to wait sometimes weeks until after surgery to determine accuracy. Now the surgeon can instantly analyze every imperfection caused by the cataract, make adjustments on the spot and customize the procedure to each patient’s eye. According to Wave Tec Vision, the new ORA System enhances precision and consistency, to further improve post-surgery vision quality.

Eye Consultants of Texas implemented this technology in August 2011. Founder Phillips Kirk Labor, MD, the first local surgeon to use it, said this answers the call of eye surgeons everywhere. “The ability to accurately measure results at any point during the procedure is a true breakthrough which could change cataract surgery forever.” In addition, ORA is designed to further improve artificial lens implantation accuracy (a normal part of the cataract procedure), regardless of the type of lens selected.

Cataracts, a painless clouding of the eye's natural crystalline lens, is a common fact of life for most people as their eyes age and the leading cause of blindness worldwide according to The CDC. Modern cataract surgery has a high success rate, with an estimated 14 million cataract procedures performed each year [2]. Advances in cataract eye surgery have meant treatment at an earlier stage without repercussions. With the addition of ORange, and now ORA, the “missing piece,” Dr. Labor says, “is now in place.”

Dr. Richard Baker, who has taught refractive surgery nationally and internationally, has worked with Eye Consultants of Texas to educate partnering Optometrists about the technology’s benefits. “This is transforming cataract surgery and couldn’t have come at a better time,” he says. “The dramatically growing population of those entering the cataract years now have an opportunity for even greater surgery results.”

About The ORA System™
The ORA System™ works by directing a beam of low intensity laser light into the eye. The light reflects off of the patient’s retina, and sensors analyze the reflected wave of light exiting the eye. This real time analysis measures all of the eye’s unique optical characteristics, and provides an accurate measurement of the eye’s focusing capabilities. The ORA System™ was developed by WaveTec Vision of Aliso Viejo, CA, considered a leader in intraoperative wavefront measurement technology for refractive cataract surgeons.
