The design incorporates olive trees, a citrus walk and many other Mediterranean and native Californian plants, such as oaks and buckeyes, coffee berry, salvia and myrica. All are well-suited for the low-water-use, low intensity style of the garden.
Marin, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) May 08, 2011
The fourth annual Marin Eco-Friendly Garden Tour destinations are set, and as has become tradition, it includes a property designed by Marin county and San Francisco Bay Area landscape architect Simmonds & Associates, Inc. This year’s featured garden, located at 180 Fairhills Road in San Rafael, is the culmination of sustainable design and thoughtful execution that has unfolded over several years. The tour will take place on May 14th from 10 am to 4 pm.
Displaying a blend of innovative techniques that include composting systems, rainwater harvesting, edible gardening, abundance of native plants, recirculating fountains and objects d’art made from recycled materials, the garden has many points of interest for fans of sustainable garden design.
“Set in native oak woodlands, this Mediterranean garden works in harmony with the Spanish style architecture of the home,” said Warren Simmonds, owner of Simmonds & Associates, Inc. “The design incorporates olive trees, a citrus walk and many other Mediterranean and native Californian plants, such as oaks and buckeyes, coffee berry, salvia and myrica. All are well-suited for the low-water-use, low intensity style of the garden.”
Simmonds saw opportunities presented by a garden that was partly level, and partly steeply sloped. The design called for replacement of more than 60% of the property’s concrete surfaces, uneven flagstone and deer paths and large lawn with more developed gravel paths, terraces, permeable surfaces, and a succulent and vegetable garden.
The self-guided Marin Eco-Friendly Garden Tour features 20 separate gardens, each of which will be hosted by the professional landscaper, designer or homeowner of the property. Highlights this year include urban chickens, gray-water systems, erosion control measures, swales and cisterns. Warren Simmonds will be in attendance at the garden at 180 Fairhills Road, San Rafael on May 14th from 12 pm - 4 pm to lead informal tours and answer questions.
The garden tour is a collaboration of the Marin County Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program and the Marin Municipal Water District. Tickets are available at http://www.brownpapertickets.com and cost $10 per person over the age of 18. Children receive free admission.
