One effective strategy for marketing a personal training business during the summer is to hold body-transformation challenges. Short challenges can keep existing clients from dropping out during the summer and also help bring in new business.

Bedros Keuilian, fitness marketing coach and founder of the international boot camp franchise Fit Body Boot Camp, says that summer is traditionally a tough time for personal trainers. He recently shared his favorite tip for marketing a personal training business in the summer and ending the season on a financial high.
“You would think that summer would be a great season for personal trainers because everyone wants to look good at the beach,” says Keuilian. “But most of those people did all that hard work in the spring. What happens in the summer is that people go on vacation or their kids are out of school and their schedule is messed up or they just have too much going on.”
Keuilian says that his most effective strategy for marketing a personal training business during the summer is to hold body-transformation challenges. He explains that short challenges can keep existing clients from dropping out during the summer and also help bring in new business.
“Short, body-transformation challenges accomplish two really important things at once,” says Keuilian. “First, they keep your current clients engaged and motivated. Second, they bring in new clients who get drawn in by the challenge itself or by the results they see in their friends.”
Keuilian explains that there are many different types of transformation challenges and many ways to use them for maximum results.
“We have two fitness challenges that we do really well with,” he explains. “We have a program called the Fitness Game Changer that does an amazing job of keeping existing clients really motivated and charged up. It also helps generate higher fees from those clients because it involves more personal service and one-on-one coaching. Then we have a Fitness Ambassador program that is extremely effective at bringing in new business because it rewards clients for referrals.”
Keuilian says that transformation challenges can run for six, eight or even twelve weeks, and can create added value for clients by including nutritional plans, special fat-burning workouts and even travel-friendly plans for when clients go on vacation.
“Your clients are rewarded in two ways; they get incredible results in a very short time and they also get some great incentives for meeting their goals and for bringing their friends in,” Keuilian says. “You might offer gift cards, a free month of training, a gift certificate to a day spa or any number of things. Get creative and base the rewards on the types of clients you work with. Moms will get excited about a spa treatment but young professional guys would probably rather have something else.”
He adds that rewards and incentives don’t have to be expensive. “Trade out rewards with other businesses in your area that might need a push during the summer,” he explains. “You can give some free training sessions to a local spa in exchange for them giving you free facials or massages. They give your sessions to their clients that bring in the most referrals and vice versa.”
Marketing a personal training business during the summer months requires some creativity, says Keuilian, but fitness challenges can actually turn a traditionally slow time into a financial boom.
