Marketworks LLC today announced the release of free real-time stock quotes on their website, HowTheMarketWorks.com. The quotes are available to the public and are also used by their free virtual stock market game. This makes it one of the few online stock market games with free real-time quotes.

Stock quotes shown on most websites are delayed by at least fifteen minutes. This is a big disadvantage when investors are practicing trading with a stock market game. HowTheMarketWorks.com now has a quote feed from BATS Exchange, which provides the site with real-time quotes for over 2,000 of the most popular USA stocks. Traders no longer have to worry about fifteen or twenty minute delays for their orders to execute for these stocks, giving them a more realistic trading experience.

The stock market game allows people to buy and sell real stocks at real prices but using virtual money. This allows practice of trading strategies without the risk of losing real money. If all of the virtual money is lost in a portfolio it can simply be reset to the original value.

Nicholas Swezey, owner of Marketworks LLC, said: "The addition of real-time quotes has been one of the most anticipated features on our site. Now that it has been added, our members are more excited about the virtual trading experience. These quotes also set us apart from other online stock games, many of which do not offer real-time quotes, or else they charge a monthly fee for them. This keeps us in line with our philosophy of offering everything on our site for free."

Traders are allowed to join public stock trading contests or create customized private contests for their friends or classrooms. Thousands of people compete in the contests every day, trying to make their way to the top of the leaderboards. These contests benefit from the new quotes as well. Previously, stock orders had to be delayed by fifteen minutes before execution in order to prevent cheating by traders with access to real-time quotes. Those traders could effectively predict the stock prices fifteen minutes into the future because of the quote delays. Now that the quote delays have been removed for many stocks, so have the order delays for them. This provides a much more convenient and realistic trading experience for the traders.
