The International District Energy Association (IDEA) presented its 2013 System of the Year Award to Markham District Energy on June 4 during ceremonies at the association’s 104th Annual Conference & Trade Show in Miami, Fla. The annual System of the Year Award is the top honor IDEA can bestow on a public or privately owned district energy system. The Award recognizes exemplary system efficiency and environmental stewardship, outstanding performance in the areas of safety and reliability and overall commitment to excellence in customer service and industry engagement.

A panel of IDEA-member judges selected Markham District Energy as this year’s winner for its operation of the system in Markham, Ontario, which earned high marks in all ratings categories.

“Since it was first awarded in 1992, the IDEA System of the Year Award has come to be associated with the best of the best,” said IDEA System of the Year Selection Committee Chairman and Former IDEA Chair Ray DuBose. “We have recognized some truly outstanding district energy systems, operating at very high efficiencies with flawless service records and very high customer satisfaction reviews. On behalf of IDEA, I would like to congratulate Markham District Energy for meeting those same standards and rightfully joining the ranks of our prior winners.”

DuBose continued, “Now in their 13th year of operation, Markham District Energy has demonstrated numerous achievements in system performance, energy efficiency, reliability, availability, environmental performance, employee health and safety, community involvement and contributions to the industry. In addition to very impressive system reliability numbers and an exemplary safety record, Markham District Energy has a remarkable record of growth in support of the Markham Centre planned development mission. Markham has been very active in the district energy industry, providing resources and training and collaboration to countless other Canadian members who are getting started in the district energy sector."

IDEA President & CEO Robert P. Thornton said, “The Markham Story can be a primary example in Canada, and across North America, on how municipal leadership can be successful if not instrumental in launching new systems and can be replicated as mayors and sustainability directors seek new clean energy solutions. The organization is clearly committed to excellence and dedicated to continuous improvement and holds high standards for efficiency, reliability and community participation.”
