Masterpiece Living® has awarded Dr. Toni Antonucci, PhD. its Robert L. Kahn award. The award, established in 2008, recognizes contributions to the propagation and application of principles of successful aging and is presented at the annual Lyceum Conference, this year held in Berkeley, California.

Dr. Antonucci, Vice President for Research, Social Sciences and the Humanities, The University of Michigan and Past President of the Gerontological Society of America, Secretary General-Elect to the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics and Expert Advisor to the United Nations is the 2011 recipient. Her research, which focuses on social relations and health across the life span, brings continued insight to the evolving needs of the aging population in America and around the world.

Dr. Kahn, offered his comments on the choice of Dr. Antonucci as the award recipient, “For most of us, I suspect, our interest in aging developed gradually, probably as we became older ourselves. Toni was exceptional in this, as in so much else. Even in her undergraduate years, she was interested in the life course, how people change as the years go by. It is a long way from Hunter College undergraduate to President of the Gerontological Society of America, but Toni was on that route from the beginning. Toni is also a wonderful colleague. I make this statement with a certainty born of 30 years of close observation as colleague and occasional co-author.”

Recipients of the Kahn award are leaders in shaping societal views of aging, identifying and tapping the unique human potential of older adults and contributing to the cultural transformation of the older adult industry. Robert L. Kahn award recipients demonstrate a personal passion for successful aging and a professional commitment to leading a movement of change in the United States, which ultimately results in an increased quality of life for every older adult.

Dr. Robert Kahn was the first recipient of the award which was subsequently named in his honor to reflect his remarkable contributions to the field. Dr. Kahn is a professor emeritus of psychology and public health at the University of Michigan, and research scientist emeritus at the Institute for Social Research, which he founded. He was a member of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Successful Aging and co-author of the book, Successful Aging, Random House ©1998; reprinted with permission by the Masterpiece Alliance Foundation ©2008.

Dr. Harry R. Moody PhD, director of academic affairs for AARP was the 2009 award recipient at the 2010 Lyceum.
