With school right around the corner, Jennifer Tuttle, mother of two, Macomb County teacher, and creator of award-winning MathMosis math program provides parents and children with advice for starting the school year on the right foot.
Top Ten Tips~
1. Get plenty of rest~ Children ages 3-6 need between 10-12 hours of sleep per night and children ages 7-12 need 10-11 hours of sleep per night. (webmd.com/parenting/guide/sleep-children ) For children to function properly and do well in school adequate sleep is necessary.
2. Color code family calendar~ Keep track of all household functions on one family calendar. Assign one color per family member. Use highlighters to color code each family member’s events.
3. Hang weekly schedules~ Put every family member’s weekly schedule on the refrigerator. Use the same highlighters to color code each family member’s schedule. “Color coding each family member’s daily schedule helps children (and parents) stay organized on a day to day basis,” says Tuttle.
4. Use folders to stay organized~ Purchase one folder per child to keep important school documents. If possible, purchase the same colors that were used on the family calendar and schedule. Keep the folders in a central location in the house such as in the kitchen or office.
5. Pack lunches in the evening~ Involve your child in packing lunches each night. This can be fun for your child and will insure that lunches will be consumed. If your child buys hot lunch, discuss hot lunch choices with your child each night. This will help your child stay organized when he/she gets to school in the morning and places his/her lunch order.
6. Lay out clothes at night~ Save time in the morning by laying out your child’s clothes the night before. Be sure to include all apparel including shoes and socks. Involve your child in this process to prevent any morning disagreements.
7. Have your child pack his/her backpack the night before school~ Teach your child responsibility early and encourage your child to check the schedule on the refrigerator each night so he/she knows what materials are needed for school the next day. For example, if the schedule indicates the next day is gym day your child may pack gym shoes in his/her backpack.
8. Purchase school supplies early~ Take advantage of back to school sales and purchase the school supplies your child will need throughout the school year. Stock up on glue sticks, crayons and pencils while you can get them for pennies. Donate some of these items to the school, but be sure to save some for home so your child has materials to use while doing homework.
9. Volunteer as often as you can at school~ Schools are always in need of volunteers. If you are unable to volunteer consider making a monetary donation to your child’s classroom by purchasing a gift card for your child’s teacher to a local teacher store or by making a contribution via adoptaclassroom.org.
10. Communicate, communicate, communicate! ~ “Communication is the cornerstone to a successful school year,” says Tuttle. Make sure you attend Meet the Teacher Night or any other school event. Valuable information about the school year is given out at this time. Notify your child’s teacher of any concerns you might have especially regarding your child’s academic, medical, and social needs. Keep in contact with your child’s teacher throughout the school year especially if there are any changes in your child’s life such as deaths or divorce.
