Computer Forensics is a very complex process and can be a daunting subject to those unfamiliar with technology and how it works

McCann E-Investigations, a Texas-based computer forensics and private investigative firm released the next in its series of computer forensics videos designed to provide a basic understanding of computer forensics. “Computer Forensics is a very complex process and can be a daunting subject to those unfamiliar with technology and how it works,” said Daniel Weiss, Partner at McCann E-Investigations. "We strive to be a wealth of information not only to our clients, but to anyone who wants to have a deeper understanding of computer forensics,” Weiss continued.

McCann E-Investigations previous computer forensics video covered data acquisition and imaging. Once the data has been imaged, a determination must be made as to which data is to be extracted for forensic examination. This process is called data culling. Information is acquired from email servers and their mailboxes, file servers, home directories, and shared folders, as well as data type and location. In addition to the content of the device, metadata is extracted that identifies the file’s creator, file modifications and send history. Encrypted, hidden, deleted and corrupted files can often be recovered. Every step in the data culling process is facilitated in a manner that protects the integrity of the data.
