Materials for Medical Devices Database Reaches Milestone

The first peer-reviewed materials database to support medical device design has reached a significant milestone, now providing a total of 22,000 datasheets and literature references, 215 materials and 634 specific material grades.

(Vocus/PRWEB ) March 17, 2009 -- The first peer-reviewed materials database to support medical device design has reached a significant milestone, now providing a total of 22,000 datasheets and literature references for 9,000 cardiovascular and orthopedic devices, 215 materials and 634 specific material grades.

The Materials for Medical Devices Database helps speed the device innovation process "by providing immediate access to key materials knowledge," said Pam Brown, product development manager for ASM International's Materials and Processes for Medical Devices (MPMD) initiative.

Fully relational and modular, the Materials for Medical Devices Database provides a comprehensive set of mechanical, physical, biological response and drug compatibility properties for the materials and coatings used in medical devices. The database also draws references from 3,000 sources including journal articles, conference proceedings, manufacturer data, USFDA CDRH 510K submissions, PMAs, SSEDs and FDA standards and guidance documents.

Comprehensive reviews of the literature concerning biocompatibility of candidate materials and coatings are peer-reviewed by 75 industry experts. The database continues to expand into materials for neurological and dental applications, as well as additional content for cardiovascular and orthopaedic applications.

For more information about the Materials for Medical Devices Database, visit www.asminternational.org/mpmd or contact Raymond Sirochman at raymond.sirochman (at) asminternational.org, tel.: 440-338-5418.

ASM International, the materials information society, launched Materials & Processes for Medical Devices in 2003 to fill the knowledge gap between the innovators who design medical devices and the engineers who understand materials and their capabilities.

The growing need for reliable materials information by the medical devices community has resulted in a growing number of new MPMD events and services, seminars, the MPMD Conference & Exposition, and MPMD books and publications.

Also of interest to the medical devices community: the International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies (SMST) is an Affiliate Society of ASM that is dedicated to disseminating technical information and education related to shape memory and superelastic materials, particularly Nitinol alloys.
