NLP International Announces Release of MedLEE Search

NLP International ("NLPI") today announced the release of MedLEE Search™, a semantic search, retrieval and real time analytics module that significantly enhances user's ability to leverage the information that has been processed by MedLEE™, a natural language processing engine developed by Columbia University and exclusively licensed by NLPI for commercialization.

The MedLEE NLP system can process millions of documents per day and up to 60,000 queries per second.

The millions of dictated and typed medical reports created in the U.S. every single day once required a laborious and time-consuming process of data entry and manipulation, where highly trained and expensive experts manually culled for needed information. MedLEE™ does away with much of this work, automatically extracting and encoding relevant clinical information. Once encoded, the information is easily available and accessible for essential clinical processes like billing, reimbursement, quality assurance analytics and data mining. And now, with MedLEE Search, these processes of mining data to discover and share clinical information for optimal decision making are made even easier. MedLEE Search can help users:

  •     Unlock unstructured clinical data for real time coding and extraction of information
  •     Uncover trends and patterns to reach organizational goals
  •     Anticipate business changes and needs
  •     Reduce operational risk by anticipating clinical events
  •     Identify candidates for clinical trials
  •     Develop early warning systems for Infection Control across all facilities or geographic regions
  •     Federate searches across all systems, file directories, journals & web sites across all data types

"MedLEE™ has been used in the academic community for many years to develop clinical applications that have been shown to improve the quality of health care," said Carol Friedman PhD, Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, who developed the technology. "I am excited that this technology will now be more broadly available to hospitals and other health care organizations, where it can continue to contribute in many ways to improve patient care."

According to Bernie Keppler, CEO of NLPI; "MedLEE Search is demonstrating processing speeds of less than one millisecond to execute complex queries from large clinical data repositories (in excess of 10 terabytes). The MedLEE NLP system can process millions of documents per day and up to 60,000 queries per second. This would make real-time processing a reality as MedLEE operates at this speed today. Our definition of 'real-time' means that once a note is signed or finished by a provider, it will be completely processed in less than one second, and if MedLEE Search identifies a disease state, a notification will be triggered back to host immediately."
