MEDSEEK Adds EHR Support to Direct Project to make Health Information Exchange More Secure, Less Expensive, and Faster

The Direct Project establishes standards and documentation to make data exchange faster, less expensive and more secure.

"We see the Direct Project as a standards-based extension of our existing technology stack that perfectly aligns with our Meaningful Use strategy.” Peter Kuhn, MEDSEEK CEO

MEDSEEK, the industry’s only provider of the optimal 360-degree online health care experience, has announced its support of the Direct Project, which aims to improve the efficiency, speed and cost of health information exchange.

“MEDSEEK already enables secure health information exchange to encourage bidirectional communication between physicians and patients within all our solutions,” said Peter Kuhn, MEDSEEK CEO. “Our technology is designed to empower patients and physicians to engage in a collaborative approach to health care, and we see the Direct Project as a standards-based extension of our existing technology stack that perfectly aligns with our Meaningful Use strategy.”

The Direct Project establishes standards and documentation to support simple, secure, and scalable methods of health information exchange. While it focuses on the technical standards and services necessary to transport encrypted clinical data between authenticated participants, when combined with certified EHR content, health systems may meet some Stage 1 Meaningful Use standards. In addition to improving business processes for healthcare providers, the Direct Project will also empower patients and families by supporting efficient exchange of health information using widely available technology.

The Direct Project is an integral component of a broader national strategy to have an interconnected health system through a Nationwide Health Information Network, which according to the Department of Health and Human Services, is being developed “to provide a secure, nationwide, interoperable health information infrastructure that will connect providers, consumers, and others involved in supporting health and healthcare. This critical part of the national health IT agenda will enable health information to follow the consumer, be available for clinical decision making, and support appropriate use of healthcare information beyond direct patient care so as to improve health.”

The objectives of the Direct Project are not new to MEDSEEK, having implemented large-scale, national integrations such as the LHIN project in Canada and smaller, localized networks of affiliated hospitals such as the Data Link project in Western North Carolina.

“MEDSEEK has extensive experience with integrated secure messaging and exchange between physicians for large health systems as well as for much smaller regional exchanges that connect patients to physicians and health care providers.” said Kuhn. “In Canada, where the Ministry of Health continuously challenges health care organizations to improve operational efficiency, information exchange and quality of care, MEDSEEK’s solutions have been integral in connecting 5,000 physicians and more than 5.5 million patients, representing more than 15 percent of the Canadian population. In western North Carolina, MEDSEEK’s clinical solutions are a vital component of the WNC Data Link which, since 2006, has connected the inpatient, outpatient, and ER systems of the 16 hospitals that serve a regional population of 800,000. We look forward to sharing the experience we’ve gained as industry leaders since 1996.”

MEDSEEK’s eHealth ecoSystem, Version 3.4, is 2011/2012 compliant and was certified as an EHR Module on April 12, 2011 by the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®). With a suite of solutions designed to provide an engaging patient and physician experience, and with the introduction of ecoSmart, MEDSEEK’s proprietary intelligent patient and physician acquisition and retention technology, MEDSEEK’s 15-year industry expertise will be an invaluable aid to the Direct Project.

“MEDSEEK is proud to be selected as a supporter of the Direct Project,” said Kuhn. “As an industry leader in providing a 360-degree online healthcare experience, we look forward to engaging with the Direct Project so that health systems and Accountable Care Organizations can achieve Meaningful Use. We believe the relationship will enable us to reach our mutual goals of making the exchange of patient data less costly, more secure and more efficient, ensuring patient data is accessible to clinicians as soon as it is needed, and ultimately improving the quality of care.”

About the Direct Project
The Direct Project develops specifications for a secure, scalable, standards-based way to establish universal health addressing and transport for participants (including providers, laboratories, hospitals, pharmacies and patients) to send encrypted health information directly to known, trusted recipients over the Internet. The Nationwide Health Information Network is a set of standards, services and policies that enable secure health information exchange over the Internet. The project itself does not run health information exchange services. Several Federal agencies and healthcare organizations are already using Nationwide Health Information Network standards to exchange information amongst themselves and their partners. The Direct Project will expand the standards and service descriptions available to address the key Stage 1 requirements for Meaningful Use, and provide an easy "on-ramp" for a wide set of providers and organizations looking to adopt. At the conclusion of this project, there will be one nationwide exchange, consisting of the organizations that have come together in a common policy framework to implement the standards and services. This project is open government, and as such, contains avenues for a broad range of public participation. See below for more information on participation.

Since 1996, MEDSEEK has focused exclusively on creating a 360-degree optimal eHealth experience for patients, clinicians and administrative staff by removing traditional integration and communication barriers, workflow roadblocks and redundant processes. Used by more than 785 hospitals, MEDSEEK solutions enable hospitals to execute enterprise-wide strategic objectives by improving quality of care, uncovering new sources of revenue and generating meaningful loyalty among physicians and patients with a low-risk, high-return investment that leverages existing IT investments and infrastructure.
