Melani Lust Photography, http://www.melanilustphotography.com, has been commissioned through CancerCare of Connecticut to create a touring photographic portrait exhibit of cancer survivors entitled "Things That Sparkle."
Owner and founder, Melani Lust, has volunteered to photograph cancer survivors for CancerCare since 2005. Because the survivors are so special, each year she creates a new theme with a corresponding set in her studio to give the survivors an uplifting and glamorous experience. Melani continues to be deeply inspired by the survivors and is honored to have the opportunity to not only photograph them, but also to get to know them.
“There are so many somber photographs of cancer survivors, but there is life during and after cancer,” says Melani. “It’s important to depict survivors in a positive and inspiring light. We want to show how they shine and have also included family members in the photographs, because families are such a big part of the recovery process.”
Using reflectors and backlighting with tiny bulbs to enhance the sparkle, Lust has produced a series of family studies in color for display in a 24-inch-by-36-inch format. There are a total of 15 large scale canvases, six of them displaying in a preview tonight at the CancerCare benefit in Norwalk, CT.
“These are heroic people,” Lust says, “and the photos reveal their inner, as well as outer, beauty. I am energized by their courage and capturing their light is uplifting for me.”
CancerCare has secured a sponsor to cover the costs of producing the canvases and the national tour is currently being scheduled.
