The video of Melanie West, Educational Psychologist and Expert in Life-Long Learning, speaking at this year's TEDx Manhattan Beach is now available.
You can see the video on YouTube.Click here to view.
In her presentation, Melanie discusses how Rote Memorization in schools is killing our children’s creativity.
“It’s probably no surprise that school caters to logical thinking,” says Melanie. “However, this isn’t always good. When learning is all about logic, school begins to treat our children like robots, and trains them to be more robotic.”
It can get even worse. As Melanie says, “We’ve come to a point in education when being good at school can be bad for your career.”
When the modern day education system was created, most people were factory workers. Therefore, to prepare for their careers, schools taught children to do robotic tasks.
However, today, most careers require creative thinking. Yet most schools still teach as though students will be working in factories.
As Melanie stated, “Things need to change. Our education system needs a revolution. And events like TEDx Manhattan Beach are a step in the right direction.”
