Nearly every nursing student worries about how they will pay for school...and that’s why we decided to donate to the AAMN Foundation and establish this scholarship.

According to a recent report from the Census Bureau, the number of male registered nurses in the United States rose from 2.7% in 1970 to 9.6% in 2011. In the face of an impending nursing shortage, organizations such as the American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN) have been working diligently to promote nursing as a male profession.
Traditionally, men who had chosen to become nurses faced many obstacles: As recently as the 1990s, men have been banned from practicing in certain areas within the hospital, including labor and delivery. Today, an uncertain economy coupled with changing public perceptions has help stimulate the growth of the male nurse occupation.
As part of its efforts to encourage men to pursue careers in nursing, the non-profit AAMN Foundation recently announced the establishment of the “Murse World Student Nurse Essay Contest,” a scholarship designed to help male students fund their nursing education. In 2012, online men’s scrubs retailer Murse World entered into a strategic partnership with AAMN in order to better achieve their shared vision of increasing the number of male nurses in the United States.
“Nearly every nursing student worries about how they will pay for school,” says Murse World co-founder Scott Topiol, himself a Registered Nurse. "We believe that it is important for companies to be socially conscious and that’s why we decided to donate to the AAMN Foundation and establish this scholarship.”
Applications for the Murse World scholarship opened on April 1, 2013 and close on July 1. Applications and requirements can be found at the online page for the male nurse scholarship.
“AAMN has done tremendous work in helping raise public awareness of male nursing issues and we are very proud of our ongoing partnership,” said Murse World’s co-founder, Alex Mayzels. “We are proud to be part of the AAMN mission and look forward to continuing to fund scholarships for male nursing students and hope to increase the award amounts in the future.”
While this is the first scholarship funded by Murse World, the company has helped nursing students in the past. This past April the company contributed to a delegation of University of Illinois nursing students who attended the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) annual convention earlier this year.
Murse World is the world's first medical uniform store exclusively for men.
