“These attractive beds address safety issues in ways that no other traditional or institutional equipment can match and we know that they will make life safer and easier for our special needs customers, as well as for those who care for them.”

Rehabmart.com, an online e-commerce company that sells rehabilitation and medical supplies, has joined into a distribution partnership with SleepSafe Beds, LLC, to offer specialty healthcare bedding systems to a wider consumer market. SleepSafe Beds actually began as a manufacturer of wood products and custom furniture under their previous company name of English Ave Industries. When the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) requested a bed that would prevent entrapment issues and falls for individuals in their group homes, English Ave Industries jumped at the chance. Even though they had not previously been in the "healthcare bed industry," they approached the project proposal without preconceived ideas and a blank sheet of paper, and their expertise with producing custom furniture allowed them to look at this challenge with a fresh perspective; why not also make the bed visually appealing?
They were one of five companies that submitted a prototype for review and the only company willing to resubmit their design including the modifications that the OMRDD requested during the review process. The OMRDD approved the SleepSafe® Beds for use in their facilities, and they have been placed on state contract for purchase by the OMRDD, representing a standard to which the agency's bed safety guidelines have been written. In April of 2001, SleepSafe Beds, LLC, filed for a patent on the SleepSafe® Bed system which was approved in 2002, and all of the SleepSafe® beds address the 7 zones of entrapment research conducted by the FDA Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup. In response to input from healthcare professionals and special needs individuals, SleepSafe Beds has added additional beds to their product line, including the SleepSafer®, which features taller sides for active individuals, and the SleepSafe® II which combines the capabilities and features of both the SleepSafe® and the SleepSafer® beds.
Every SleepSafe® bed comes with a foundation that supports the mattress and style choices include fixed or articulated models and hi-lo frames. The clear windows employed in the safety rails prevent the opportunity for entanglement, and the visibility creates the opportunity for both acknowledgment and the need to observe the environment in situations where the need to see and be seen are highly important. Additionally, the SleepSafe® beds are visually appealing, contributing to an aesthetic that helps to create a more 'homey' and naturalized setting. “We are proud to offer these special bedding solutions from SleepSafe Beds to more consumers,” said Hulet Smith, Founder and CEO of Rehabmart. “These attractive beds address safety issues in ways that no other traditional or institutional equipment can match and we know that they will make life safer and easier for our special needs customers, as well as for those who care for them.”
