In an inspiring and poignant narrative that highlights one man’s thoughts and emotions, author Merlene Hutto Byars unravels life’s truth that just like nature, life also has its four seasons—revealing the joys and sorrows of spring, summer, fall, and winter—as seen through the eyes of her husband, Alvin Byars. Did Jesus Drive a Pickup Truck is a wonderful anthology of both poetry and prose, where Alvin’s words unveil the goodness and beauty of it all by teaching everyone that there is always a place – and time – for everything.

In this insightful and stirring collection, Alvin Byars wrote down his thoughts and emotions and shared the seasons of his life through his words and verses. In Did Jesus Drive a Pickup Truck, he deemed his childhood as the springtime of his life when his mother’s influence helped him see God in the lives of the people in their cotton mill community. His adolescence is the summertime of his life, when he paid tribute to his beloved sports, his team, teachers, and lifelong dreams. His marriage is its full bloom, when he and author Merlene Hutto Byars started a family together. He described myasthenia gravis as the closing part of this season, when he had the debilitating disease that left him unable to swallow, open his eyes, speak coherently, walk erectly, and breathe easily. His cancer is a remembrance of the autumn of his life, when he still endured living while battling brain tumor. Finally, though he finally faced wintertime, he showed how wonderful life is through poignant verses—about his love for God, family, and everything in his life—that touch the heart.

In Did Jesus Drive a Pickup Truck, readers can see life in a new light through the eyes of Alvin Byars. His journey through life was not easy, but it can encourage anyone. Through his words and verses, they will learn and understand more about life and God’s love.
