The nationwide law firm of Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that a new study has found that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to predict metal-on-metal hip replacement failure, regardless of whether or not patients are experiencing symptoms. According to an article published on May 15th in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, MRI detected synovitis (tissue damage) in 68% of asymptomatic patients screened. In patients suffering symptoms due to mechanical causes, the detection rate was 75%, while MRIs were able to detect damage in 78% of patients reporting unexplained pain.*
“This study is encouraging. Any tool that can help detect failing metal-on-metal hip implants at the earliest stage possible is an important step forward in helping those suffering complications due to these products,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently representing clients in several metal-on-metal hip replacement litigations, and continues to offer free legal evaluations to alleged victims of these devices.
Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Complication
Metal-on-metal hip implants have been the subject of safety concerns since the August 2010 DePuy ASR hip recall.** Since 2011, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has been reviewing the safety of all-metal hips, amid concerns that metal ions shed from such devices could lead to serious complications, including the formation of psuedotumors, metallosis, and early device failure. In January, the agency issued new guidance for patients fitted with these types of implants, advising doctors to consider metal ion testing in those experiencing symptoms of hip implant failure. The FDA also proposed stricter regulations for such devices that would, if adopted, require the manufacturers of metal-on-metal hip replacements currently on the market to conduct post-market safety studies in order to keep selling them.***
According to The New York Times, Johnson & Johnson announced last week that it would stop selling metal-on-metal hip implants, including an all-metal version of the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement, which is currently the subject of thousands of lawsuits. The company cited both decreased demand for all-metal hips, as well as the recent FDA action, for its decision.****
