As metal-on-metal hip implant lawsuits continue to make their way through the courts, a new study published on December 18th in “Arthritis Care & Research” has revealed the most likely risk factors for revision surgery following total hip replacement, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to the study, patients aged 75 or under at the time of their first surgery were more likely to need revisions than those who were older. Patients who were taller or heavier also had higher rates of revision, as did those with a prior history of orthopedic surgery, and those who received a cemented femoral component. *

The study, which was conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, was the first in the U.S. to investigate risk factors related to hip replacement surgery. The team examined data, including hospital records, on 719 patients who had undergone hip replacement between July 1995 and June 1996. The subjects were each paired with a matched control patient and followed for 12 years.

“Hip implant recipients should be aware of the risk factors cited by this study, especially individuals with metal-on-metal hip replacements, as those devices were often marketed to younger, more active patients,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients who sustained injuries from a variety of metal-on-metal hip systems. The firm is currently offering free and confidential lawsuit evaluations to individuals who suffered serious complications, including metal poisoning, due to all-metal hips.

A number of metal-on-metal hip implant manufacturers have been named in lawsuits alleging the devices are prone to premature failure, and can expose patients to dangerous amounts of metal ions. The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are actively filing lawsuits in the multidistrict litigation established in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio, for claims involving the DePuy ASR hip implant (MDL No. 2197). The firm is also involved in the federal litigation underway in the Northern District of Texas concerning the metal-on-metal DePuy Pinnacle hip device (MDL No. 2244). Free case evaluations are also being offered to patients impacted by the July 2012 Stryker Rejuvenate recall, and the June 2012 Smith & Nephew metal liner recall. In addition, Bernstein Liebhard LLP continues to investigate cases concerning the Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant, as well as Wright Profemur and Conserve metal hip implants.

In May 2011, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued orders for postmarket surveillance studies to manufacturers of metal-on-metal hip systems. Metal particles shed by metal-on-metal hip replacements may result in an adverse local tissue reaction that has the potential to cause damage to bone and/or tissue surrounding the implant and joint, according to the FDA. The agency is also aware of some case reports in the literature of patients in which high levels of metal ions in the bloodstream may have caused other types of symptoms or illnesses elsewhere in the body, including effects on the heart, nervous system, and thyroid gland. **
