Any method to help detect psuedotumors earlier is an important step forward in helping those suffering complications from metal-on-metal hip replacements.

Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that new study has found that early detection of metal-on-metal hip replacement complications could be possible via ultrasound. The research, which was presented last month at the Hip Society Specialty Day Meeting in Chicago, included 40 all-metal hip patients – 28 men and 12 women – who had undergone both ultrasounds and metal artifact reduction sequence (MARS) MRI. Both tests performed equally as well in detecting pseudotumors, a common metal-on-metal hip implant complication. However, a cost analysis showed a savings between $250,000 and $750,000 for every 100,000 patients that were screened via ultrasound instead of MARS.*

“Any method to help detect psuedotumors earlier is an important step forward in helping those suffering complications from metal-on-metal hip replacements. This study also highlights the exorbitant costs these problematic medical devices have levied on our health care system,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently representing clients in several metal-on-metal hip replacement litigations, and continues to offer free legal evaluations to alleged victims of these devices.

Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Lawsuits
Metal-on-metal hip implants have been the subject of safety concerns since the August 2010 DePuy ASR hip recall.** In 2011, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) embarked on a safety review of all-metal hips, amid concerns that metal ions shed from such devices could lead to serious complications, including the formation of psuedotumors, metallosis, and early device failure. In January, the agency issued new guidance for patients fitted with such devices, advising doctors to consider metal ion testing in those experiencing symptoms of hip implant failure. The FDA also said it had proposed a new rule that would make all-metal hips ineligible for the agency’s 510(k) clearance process, which allowed such devices to come to market without human testing.***
