Recipients of metal hip implants such as the DePuy ASR and Pinnacle metal hip replacements may be shocked by the latest study addressing the occurrences of metal-on-metal hip replacement failure. A July 2012 study found that more than three-quarters of metal-on-metal hip replacement failures occur within two years after surgery. Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients who have been injured by defective metal-on-metal hip implants, reports on the study published in the July issue of Orthopedic medical journal.

Researchers reviewed data from 80 patients who underwent revision surgery for their metal hip replacement. 78 percent of those patients had revision surgery within two years of getting the implant, and 92.5 percent needed the metal hip implant removed within the first three years. The study also found that 13 percent of the patients who required revision surgery suffered from localized soft tissue reactions, caused by metallosis, or metal debris that releases into the bloodstream from the friction between the metal joints.

“This data is consistent with what we are seeing within our client base—especially with our DePuy ASR and DePuy Pinnacle metal-on-metal hip clients.” Commented Bernstein Liebhard LLP partner Felecia Stern. The Firm is also investigating and filing cases on behalf of individuals allegedly injured by the recalled Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stems and the Wright Conserve hip systems.

Metal Hip Replacement Failure Growing Concern And Subject Of Litigation

The subject of hip replacement failure has been of increasing concern since numerous studies and medical advisories have shown the dangers of metal hip implants. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) received almost 17,000 adverse event reports about metal hip implants from 2000-2011.* The FDA gathered a panel of experts to evaluate the risks of metal hip replacements in June 2012 and many experts advised doctors to stop using the devices, though they did not issue a complete recall of all metal hip implants. Other health regulatory agencies have issued similar warnings and recommended against the devices.

Those who experienced metal hip replacement failure may be able to file a lawsuit to seek compensation for their injuries, including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Since the dangers associated with metal-on-metal hip implants were first identified, Bernstein Liebhard LLP has followed developments, and provided a wealth of information on hip recall news on its website http://www.consumerinjurylawyers.com/.
