New York, New York (PRWEB) June 22, 2012
Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a New York law firm nationally recognized for its consumer protection and mass tort practices, reports that a U. S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) public advisory committee will convene on June 27-28, 2012 to discuss the safety of metal-on-metal hips.* The meeting, which will be open to the public, will focus on the following issues:
Bernstein Liebhard LLP Partner Jeffrey S. Grand, who is serving on both the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee and the Discovery Committee in the DePuy Pinnacle hip litigation, commented: “We are hopeful the advisory committee will concur with the guidance emerging from recent studies and recommend that metal-on-metal hip implants, which have caused so much harm to our clients, no longer be used in patients.”
FDA Meeting Follows Prior Concerns About Metal Hip Replacement Problems
The FDA meeting is set to convene after mounting evidence concerning serious metal hip replacement problems. Since the August 2010 DePuy ASR hip implant recall, a multitude of studies have raised issues questioning the safety of metal-on-metal hips. On May 9, 2012, Health Canada, the Canadian national health regulatory agency, issued a warning for patients to be aware of metal hip replacement problems and adverse effects.** In February 2012, an investigation by the British Medical Journal advised that patients should be monitored annually for signs of metallosis, or metal poisoning, for as long as they had a metal hip implant.*** On March 2012, a study published in The Lancet medical journal concluded that metal-on-metal hips should not be used at all due to serious issues with the safety of the implants.****
