New York, NY (PRWEB) September 20, 2012
Metal-on-metal hip implants continue to be cause for concern, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. On September 13, 2012, the UK National Joint Registry (“NJR”) presented its annual report at the British Orthopaedic Association meeting in Manchester.* Data from the NJR, which revealed that the DePuy ASR metal-on-metal hip implants had excessively high failure rates, proved to be the impetus for the August 2010 worldwide recall of all DePuy ASR hip replacement implants. Approximately 93,000 devices were subject to the recall. The NJR has since continued to monitor and track the performance of medical devices. According to last week’s annual report, researchers looked at more than 80,000 hip replacement procedures performed in 2011. Of those, 11 percent were revision surgeries. While the report noted that metal-on-metal hip replacements have poor survivorship rates, the report also noted that the data did not indicate that they are associated with an increased risk of cancer within the first seven years of implantation. However, as reported by Reuters, the NJR added that “We must, however, point out that many cancers have prolonged latency after initial carcinogens and thus long-term follow up is needed to provide a definitive answer.”** In reporting on these findings, Reuters highlighted the fact that manufacturers of metal-on-metal hip implants, who were ordered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) last year to take blood samples from patients to measure metal ion levels, have not fully complied.
“It is unfortunate that the United States still does not have its own independent registry in place to track the performance of medical devices,” said Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients and filing lawsuits on behalf of individuals claiming injuries stemming from a variety of metal-on-metal hip systems.
