Christmas is already one of the most expensive times of the year. However, as well as the price of presents, food, decorations, and all the other festive trimmings, Christmas can be a costly time for another reason: insurance claims.
Every year during the Christmas period, insurance companies have to cope with a huge spike in claims. These claims come from over 200,000 people nationwide, and can ruin the festive time of year for many more. Key culprits that cause these claims include fires, floods, and thefts – all of which can have devastating consequences on both the people and the homes that they affect. Having someone burgle your house when it’s full of presents would be bad enough, but ending up homeless at Christmas would be disastrous.
Over Christmas 2010, there were 103,000 claims for burst pipes – costing £680million. In the same period there were over 10,000 burglary claims – totalling over £15million. There are also around 80,000 personal injury claims made over Christmas every year. In fact, the average insurance claim during December is 16% higher than those made in the rest of the year.
Within the home, 79% of insurance claims at Christmas are due to fires, and cost on average £1,146. These fires are due to a wide range of causes. The main cause of these fires (36% of claims) is accidents, followed by stormy weather (26%), and bust pipes (15%).
The resulting damage is widespread, with 21% of claims being for carpets and flooring, 17% for gadgets and electronics, and 9% for roof damage. With this in mind it’s not surprising that the claims are so much higher than any other time of the year!
In order to raise awareness of this issue, Methodist Insurance has created an infographic highlighting the costs and causes of insurance claims during the festive season using internal and external data sets. They hope that by increasing people’s awareness of this issue they can encourage people both to take more care this Christmas and also make sure they have up-to-date insurance - just in case!
