ViaSat Selected as VSAT Network Supplier for Phase 4 of e-Mexico
Broadband Project
New Hub and Terminals Will Expand Internet Access to More Citizens in
Mexico
DULUTH, Ga. (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) February 20, 2007 --
ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq:VSAT) is supplying an additional LinkStar®
hub and 1,200 VSATs (Very Small Aperture Terminals) to INTERDirec
(INTERNET Directo S.A. de C.V.) in the Phase 4 expansion of the
e-Mexico network. The network provides broadband access to the general
population of Mexico via Digital Community Centers (DCCs) and schools.
The LinkStar system was the original winning network technology for
3,200 VSATs in Phase I of the project as well. This new phase of the
project will bring the total of connected VSAT sites in the e-Mexico
network to over 9,000. Final deliveries of the LinkStar hub and
terminals are expected to be completed this month and then ViaSat will
support INTERDirec in bringing the network expansion to full and stable
operation.
The e-Mexico network is one of the primary components of the e-Mexico
National System, a national IT project for Mexico. The project is
coordinated by the Secretaría de
Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) with three main areas of focus:
connectivity, systems, and content. The connectivity phase is now
reaching the most remote towns all over the country to give Internet
access to schools, public libraries, centers for adult education, rural
centers of heath services, and community centers open to service for the
general population.
“This Phase 4 expansion of the e-Mexico
network will allow INTERDirec and ViaSat to improve its service with
more bandwidth per site,” said Mr. Carlos
Peralta, president of INTERDirec, a subsidiary company of IUSACOM. “We
are very pleased to contract with ViaSat again for the expansion of the
e-Mexico system to comply with our commitments for this important
project of the Mexican government.”
“The LinkStar system has proven its ability to
provide very cost-effective broadband access for many education projects
across Latin and South America,” said Robert
Feierbach, managing director Latin America and EMEA. “As
we continue to build new features into our products, ViaSat engineers
focus on ensuring that our systems are compatible with newly developing
applications for education, distance learning, and enterprise networking.”
“The continued confidence that INTERDirec has
shown in us and our LinkStar technology is very gratifying. We’ll
be working hard to ensure that Phase 4 of this very important project in
Mexico is a success,” said Hugo Frega, ViaSat
regional director for Latin America.
