Michael Garratt marks his debut in the world of literature with Bush Talk: Two Boys and a Mischievous Marsupial. This new novel tells an unforgettable story of an extraordinary friendship between two boys and a joey and how their bond led them on many exciting adventures, some of which will change their lives forever.

On the way home from school two brothers find a live joey in its dead mother’s pouch. When they take the joey home they have no idea that it will change their whole family in more ways than one. It soon becomes apparent that the baby kangaroo is no ordinary creature. It is intelligent, mischievous, can understand human speech and communicate with other bush animals. The joey also tests the resolve of the family who find themselves struggling with the worst drought in living memory.

By turns funny and poignant, heartbreaking and heartwarming, Bush Talk is a beautifully wrought tale of joy and of the remarkable friendships that come from the most unexpected places.

About the Author
Michael Garratt arrived in Australia in October 1965 as a $10 Pom with a degree in Natural Sciences in his back pocket and a passion for rocks, fossils and minerals. He has spent a lifetime working either as a field geoscientist in academia, geological survey of Victoria or in mineral exploration, acquiring an MSc (hons) and PhD in the process.

His love of the bush and Australia’s native flora and fauna often crept into the nightcap stories he told to his young daughters and children of friends. Now retired, he lives in Heathcote amongst the best geology in Victoria.
