According to CBDMT, the Market and Business Intelligence company, about ten microalgae are used for commercial applications. They are used as a whole without transformation or are used to produce extracts of interest. The total production volume of microalgae for all application is in the tens of thousands of tons. The Algae mostly produced are: Chlorella, Cryptecodinium, Dunaliella, Haematococcus, Spirulina and Ulkenia.

Microalgae Market and Application Outlook

The two algae with the biggest production are Spirulina and Crypthecodinium. Together they represent about 70% of the global production according to Philippe Tramoy, CBDM.T Managing Partner

The term “microalgae” defines all microscopic algae, unicellular or filamentous, with any relationship with taxonomy. Microalgae are an extremely heterogeneous group of microorganisms. This group accounts for more than 50,000 species which are very different phylogenetically. This diversity makes microalgae a potentially rich source of a vast array of chemical products with applications in the feed, food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and also fuel industries.

Microalgae can be produced using a wide variety of methods, ranging from closed fully controlled methods to less predictable methods in outdoor tanks. The terminology used to describe the type of algal culture include indoor/outdoor, open/closed, axenic, batch, continuous and semi-continuous.

Open pond systems are shallow ponds in which algae are cultivated. Nutrients can be provided through runoff water from nearby land areas or by channeling the water from sewage/water treatment plants.

Photobioreactors are different types of tanks or closed systems in which algae are cultivated. Algal cultures consist of a single or several specific strains optimized for producing the desired product.

There are two types of products with microalgae available and these include whole microalgae biomass and extracts. About half of microalgae productions are dedicated to products with whole microalgae and the other half to production of extracts.

Three main extracts come from microalgae carotenoids, phycobiliproteins and antioxidants. Main microalgae market applications are human and animal nutrition, cosmetics and research.

Some of the key microalgae business players are Cyanotech, Earthrise Nutritionals LLC, Martek, Roquette, Sapphire Energy, Seambiotic Ltd., Solazyme, Fuji Chemicals, EID Parry and Cognis.
