"We wanted to highlight businesses in cities locally and nationally that go above and beyond for the military community"
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) July 07, 2011
Military and Veterans Discount Center, a comprehensive nationwide directory of over 225,000 businesses that provide military discounts, veteran discounts, military spouse discounts and reservist discounts, launched today and released its first ranking of cities whose merchants provide the most military discounts on a per capita basis. “We wanted to highlight businesses in cities locally and nationally that go above and beyond for the military community. This year, Washington, DC leads the nation in military discounts per capita,” said Terrence Thomas, CEO of Military and Veterans Discount Center. “MVDC thanks all businesses that support military personnel and veterans through military discounts,” Thomas, himself a Navy veteran, continued. “It is deeply appreciated by those who are serving or have served.”
At 5.88 military discounts per thousand residents, the nation’s capital topped the 2011 list. Not far behind was Baltimore, with 5.46. Rounding out the top five were (3) Fayetteville, NC; (4) Philadelphia, PA and (5) Colorado Springs with 5.40, 5.38 and 5.28 discounts per thousand respectively. “Four out of the top five have major military bases near them, but Philadelphia is an anomaly, with JRB Willow Grove, some 20 miles away. We believe Philadelphia’s ranking is due mainly to the overwhelming number of Dunkin Donuts that provide military discounts in the area,” states Thomas. The full report on the top 40 cities for military discounts can be viewed at the Military and Veterans Discount Center.
A frequent complaint by service members, however, is the lack of uniformity regarding military and veteran discounts, especially with national chains. “We find that many national chains put the military discount program in the hands of their local management” said Thomas. “More often than not, a patron assumes a discount is national and subsequently spreads the word". Unfortunately locations that are not part of the program end up receiving an inordinate amount of complaints by military personnel about not having a military discount. "One of our main aims is to remove this confusion and become a de facto clearinghouse for this type of information."
Apart from their proximity to military installations, the cities in the top 20 also share a very active local chamber of commerce that encourages local businesses to provide military discounts and a high number of national chains that have military discounts. As Thomas explains, "we believe we have just scratched the surface on identifying local merchants that provide military discounts and we hope that rankings like this one will motivate even more merchants to provide discounts to military personnel and veterans."
