Doe Run Pleased With Commission’s Unanimous Approval Of State Implementation Plan

Officials with The Doe Run Company, which operates a lead smelter in Herculaneum, attended the commission hearing in Jefferson City, Mo. The plan will now go to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for final approval.

St. Louis (PRWEB) May 5, 2007 – On April 26, The Missouri Air Conservation Commission unanimously approved the consent judgment for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ (MDNR) State Implementation Plan (SIP) for Herculaneum, Mo. Officials with The Doe Run Company, which operates a lead smelter in Herculaneum, attended the commission hearing in Jefferson City, Mo. The plan will now go to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for final approval.

“As a company, we are committed to continuous improvement and being a good neighbor in the communities in which we operate,” said Gary Hughes, general manager of the Herculaneum smelter. “Following the rigorous and thorough process of preparing an appropriate plan, we are pleased with the unanimous approval of the SIP. We believe this SIP will enable the company to attain the clean air standard on a consistent basis in Herculaneum. We look forward to receiving the final approval from EPA and proceeding with the full implementation of the plan.”

Following the rigorous and thorough process of preparing an appropriate plan, we are pleased with the unanimous approval of the SIP. We believe this SIP will enable the company to attain the clean air standard on a consistent basis in Herculaneum. We look forward to receiving the final approval from EPA and proceeding with the full implementation of the plan.
The SIP is a process used throughout the United States to improve air quality and help achieve federal air standards – in this case, for lead. There are approximately 60 engineering and administrative control measures proposed in the SIP. Doe Run has proactively implemented many of the controls, including:

  • Modification to the ventilation systems to improve dust-capturing efficiency;
  • Installation of automated baghouse malfunction alerts;
  • Upgraded control of air injection into the blast furnace;
  • Installation of improved bags in baghouse ;
  • Bag-cleaning technology to improve dust-capturing efficiency; and
  • Wheel tunnel enclosure and ventilation system.

Doe Run announced in April that all of its air monitors, including the area nearest its Herculaneum facility, met the National Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for lead during the first quarter of 2007, according to data collected by Doe Run from air monitoring stations located there. MDNR has since confirmed that data.

Based in St. Louis, The Doe Run Company is a privately held natural resources company and the largest integrated lead producer in the Western Hemisphere. Dedicated to environmentally responsible mineral and metal production, Doe Run operates the world’s largest, single-site lead recycling facility, located in Missouri. The Doe Run Company and its subsidiaries deliver products and services necessary to provide power, protection and convenience. Doe Run has operations in Missouri, Washington and Arizona.
