Our lawyers help clients whose lives have been affected by using Mirena.

Dyer, Garofalo, Mann & Schultz, an experienced medical device law firm, is evaluating legal claims stemming from the use of Bayer’s intrauterine device (IUD) Mirena. Product Liability Lawsuits concerning Mirena have been filed in recent months alleging that the medical device has caused severe personal injury. It is believed that the device can migrate from its original position after insertion.
The IUDs are advertised as a safe, effective form of birth control, but many women are alleging that the device has caused a variety of serious side effects that weren’t properly disclosed. In 2009, the FDA issued a warning to Bayer regarding their marketing of Mirena, which failed to disclose safety risks. Bayer was again reprimanded by the FDA in 2010 when it was discovered that Mirena representatives were traveling to consumers’ homes and overstating the efficacy of Mirena while minimizing the risks of using the IUD.
Mirena lawsuits have alleged that the Mirena IUD can cause the following health problems:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Embedment of the device into the uterine wall
- Perforated uterine wall
- Perforated cervix
- Infertility after removal of the IUD
- Ectopic pregnancy (fertilized egg growing outside the uterus)
- Intrauterine pregnancy (pregnancy despite the presence of the IUD, or wrongful birth)
Many women understand that contraceptives, including IUDs and birth control pills, carry a risk of side effects. However, when medical device manufacturers such as Bayer fail to disclose the full range of potential complications, women cannot make a fully informed decision and may choose a contraceptive method that’s not right for them.
