As the President nears a decision to send additional combat forces to Afghanistan, the world's largest military training exhibition is about to open in Orlando. The event, from November 30 to December 3, will demonstrate how our military trains for irregular warfare--for combat, and just as importantly, for civic operations designed to gain the confidence and cooperation of local foreign populations.

The event, known as the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education conference, will feature hundreds of exhibitors demonstrating the latest training technology, including live and virtual simulations which exactly replicate environments and situations our troops will face when deployed. Interactions with live actors in simulated Afghan villages, with avatars, and in immersive small unit combat, will occur all over the floor. During the event, which attracts corporations, government and military representatives from around the world, US Army Vice Chief of Staff, General Peter Chiarelli will discuss "The Road Ahead for the U.S. Army", addressing the challenges facing the forces after eight years of combat. In addition, veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan will hold a series of special sessions to discuss their training and experiences in combat.

Insight from the Flag Officer Panel will be gained in how they are dealing with the demands and what the needs are for the continuing fight. Participants on the panel include:

Training to operate remote vehicles and sensors is rapidly becoming a vital area. At I/ITSEC, robotic equipment and unmanned areal vehicle training technology will be much in evidence.
