Monroeville Mall sets an outstanding example for all centers to aspire to and similar initiatives are being adopted by other CBL centers nationwide.

CBL & Associates Properties, Inc., one of the nation's largest owners and developers of malls and shopping centers, today announced it presented Monroeville Mall in Pittsburgh (Monroeville), PA with CBL’s Green Property of The Year Award. Monroeville Mall is being honored as the inaugural recipient for their outstanding effort to reduce energy consumption and waste at the property.

CBL began implementing sustainability initiatives several years ago using integrated facilities management. More recently, CBL brought these initiatives to the shopping center level with the development of the Green Team, a corporate level group designed to work with CBL Mall properties to monitor energy consumption at every level possible. This successful energy conservation program began to pay valuable dividends and recently culminated with today’s announcement of the "Green Property of the Year" Award.

“Monroeville Mall has taken a number of steps to increase energy efficiency at the property,” said Tom Gerber, Monroeville Mall's General Manager. These steps include terminating utilities immediately when spaces are vacated, continually monitoring operating hours of escalators to prevent unnecessary energy consumption, and altering interior mall lighting to be controlled by a photocell, meaning mall lighting is only illuminated when natural light is not adequate to light the property. Additionally, Monroeville Mall is responsible for a successful cardboard recycling program, contributing more than 254 tons of cardboard annually. In 2009, Monroeville Mall decreased its power consumption by nearly 15.0%. Based on the national homeowner average in power consumption, Monroeville Mall conserved enough power to provide electricity to over 3,500 homes for one month or 291 homes for an entire year.

Matt Phillips, Director of Sustainability for CBL, said, “Monroeville Mall sets an outstanding example for all centers to aspire to and similar initiatives are being adopted by other CBL centers nationwide.” CBL will continue to place an emphasis on energy conservation programs in all of our mall properties.
