The Fishtrap Ranch consists of 1,584± deeded acres and 160 acres of BLM lease which adjoins the National Forest and the Pintlar Wilderness. The main headquarters includes a classic log barn, a three-bedroom house, a shop building, a set of working corrals, and an outdoor riding arena. The recently constructed three-bedroom, two-bathroom owner’s residence is located along Fishtrap Creek about one-half mile from the headquarters. The ranch also boasts two elevated one-room hunting cabins, and has a history of producing around 350 tons of hay per year for its year round cattle operation.
“The Fishtrap Ranch is a true mountain ranch with all the attributes that one would expect,” said Shuman. “Great views, a trout stream, immediate access to National Forest, comfortable improvements, and good long-term neighbors, but more than anything else, it is outstanding Montana hunting land and sits on a migratory path for trophy elk herds.”
The main fishery on the Montana hunting land is Fishtrap Creek which has good populations of brook, rainbow and cutthroat trout, and is a crucial spawning stream for fluvial Arctic grayling. The Big Hole River is accessible literally across the road from the ranch at the Fishtrap Public Access Area. A conservation easement is in place with the Montana Land Reliance ensuring that this valuable wildlife resource and associated migratory corridor and perpetually protected from development.
